How It Works
Eyebrow transplants are outpatient procedures performed in a practitioner's office. These procedures do not involve general anesthesia but do involve local anesthesia (meaning a small area is numbed) and oral sedation (which increases relaxation in patients). The local anesthesia is used on the back of the scalp, which is the area from which the practitioner typically removes the hair to be transplanted. The hair can be removed as a strip that is later segmented into single hairs, or individual hairs can be removed one at a time.
Follicles come along as part of the process as well, which is known as follicular unit extraction (FUE). Because the follicle comes, too - ”and not just a strand of hair - ”it can begin to produce hair in its new home in the eyebrow.
After that, the next step is to create tiny incisions in the eyebrow area. The practitioner then places the donor follicles into those incisions.
After the Procedure
Following the procedure, new eyebrow growth will commence within three to four months, and results will reach their peak after six to eight months. Experienced surgeons are usually able to deliver permanent results with just a single procedure, though certain circumstances may require a second procedure.
While new growth takes a few months to become apparent, certain steps are necessary immediately following the procedure. Practitioners typically prescribe pain medication, which will help with after-surgery pain. (That pain subsides within two days.) Antibiotics are prescribed as well.
Going forward, because the donor hair will keep growing at the rate it grew on the scalp, patients will need to take care to maintain their enhanced eyebrows at least once per week.
