What Causes a Receding Hairline? What Causes a Receding Hairline?

In our San Jose hair restoration clinic, we've worked with patients whose hairlines are receding for a wide variety of reasons.

We've put together this post for people who are curious about what might be causing their receding hairline. The following are some of the most common factors.

1. Male Pattern Baldness

In men, one of the most common causes of a receding hairline is male pattern baldness. In fact, it's a primary reason people seek hairline surgery in San Francisco.

The hairline recession caused by male pattern baldness can make the hair eventually take the shape of an M. The receding hairline is sometimes accompanied by a bald spot on the crown.

In advanced cases, the hair may be reduced to a horseshoe pattern that wraps around the head.

2. Traction Alopecia

Traction alopecia can strike men and women alike. It occurs when hair is pulled in the same direction over an extended period of time. For instance, this might be caused by a tight hairstyle, like a ponytail.

Restrictive headwear may also be at fault. The good news, according to MedicalNewsToday, is that if caught early, traction alopecia is reversible. For instance, switching to a more relaxed hairstyle can go a long way.

However, if the damage goes on for too long, the harmful effects may be permanent.

3. Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia

Frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA) is a condition that causes slow hair loss. The exact cause of FFA is still unknown, per the NIH.

Along with the hairline recession, FFA can also cause scarring near the forehead. The eyebrows and eyelashes may display hair loss, as well.

4. Protein Deficiency

If your hairline is receding, you might want to ask yourself if you're getting enough protein. Hair is largely made up of protein, so a lack of it can adversely affect your hairline and other areas.

5. Stress

Stress-induced hair loss, known as telogen effluvium, is another hair-damaging problem to be on the lookout for.

If you're finding yourself stressed frequently, try making the time to try stress-reduction techniques like exercise and meditation. Your mind - ”and your hairline - ”will thank you.
